    520d E60 alempi jakoketju katkettu.

    Hi,
    (writing this one in English, but feel free to reply in Finnish).

    I have a 2008 520d E60 and while driving on the highway the engine broke down. No noises, no nothing. It turns out that the "alempi jakoketju" broke, and the engine was seriously damaged as a result.

    I know that cars with this engine (mine as well) were recalled last year for a similar issue, but I was told this was about the "ylempi jakoketju", and the lower chain is not covered by the extended warranty.

    Any previous experiences with this problem?

        Bummer. The infamous N47 engine. There are couple of cases reported in this forum already, and a discussion thread: http://www.btcf.fi/forum/showthread.php?t=319713

        Would you mind sharing information about the oil change interval history of your car in case you have this information available? According to some rumours these cases may be at least partially linked to high-mileage oil change intervals. Others say all N47 engines will eventually fail claiming an inherent issue with engineering.

            I did all the regular recommended checks at BMW dealer, as well as all oil changes. The car was also recalled last year for the campaign related to the "upper" chain (the one located in a cumbersome position and that was known to have a problem in the tension regulator). I had an oil change due (I was actually late by 2000Km, but on a 60,000 interval that cannot be an issue).

              I forgot to say that I almost killed myself in the process, as the engine stopped without any warning while I was driving in the highway in heavy traffic. I had less than 10 seconds to get out of the traffic without engine power and without power steering, and get the car on the side lane.

                Pardon me, the car had a history of 60,000 km oil change intervals and had been serviced by a qualified BMW dealer according to official service plan?

                  I assume engine is destroyed. I would go for new one from ebay. After changing engine I would change oils with 10 000 - 15 000km interval and use RVS treatment.

                  edit. If you mean that you have changed oils with 60 000 km interval, its just too long no matter what shop or anybody says.

                    Worth checking if you are not going to buy a new engine.
