    snow track

    Hi,
I'm a new member on your forum. The reason why I came across is that I'm interested in driving on snow or ice. I heard that there are snow/ice tracks on frozen lakes in Finland in the winter. I would appreciate any information regarding this topic, especially where the tracks are located, what is the most appropriate season time, what are the prices of hiring, are there any low prices options, and of course, do I need to get tires with spikes or is it ok to drive with normal winter tires (I drive bmw e36 325, any hints regarding mark and model of the tires are welcome).

Hello and welcome to the forum

There is racinng on the ice and snow and it is quite popular in finland. In finland it is illegal to drive with summertyres on. I use normal wintertyres if i race on ice, but it's only because I have to drive my E36 coupe everywhere else too (not just ice).. There are also competions in ice racing, called jokkis, or jokamiesluokka. Guys drive rwd or 4wd racing cars on ice track and they use spiketyres.

I haven't heard about someone renting their equipment for racing in real competion, but I know one place where you can drive on a snowtrack with the tracks owners cars.. That is what is going on around here, near Nivala..

    cheers

      Hi Juha,
I'd like to drive with my own car. What I ment was how I can get on the race track, i.e. do I have to buy a ticket or are snow tracks prepared by local enthusiasts. I'm also interested what is the best time to visit Finland for snow racing, maybe January and Ferbruary?

      Regards
      Simon

If it's for example our club's race track day, it's free for members. Few euros for others, I think. But if you visit on our races, I think people will give you chance to drive for free (afterall you must be foreigner, at least I think so according your posts). Best time for racing might be from january till march I think. January is quite cold here but it gives the right feeling when you drive like crazy on the track (sweating like pig ) and when you get out the car to -30 celcius, well, it's just awesome

I don't know much about the racing in other places then Nivala, because I usually drive here on the ice of the lake. It's free for all if there's no competion on the day you are going there..

Thank you guys for the informaton. I'm realy interested to make short winter holidays in Finland or maybe Sweden with just one purpose and that is snow/ice drifting. I'd like to stay for around 5 days and I hope I can get enough of drifting in this time . I'm still not sure whether ice tracks are prepared for a longer period of time or you prepare them just for special events like track days?

I come from Slovenia. Driving on snow here is possible in January and February, but it is limited to the streets in the mountains that are not treated by salt and these are very rare so we have to wait for the snow and then drive all night before streets are cleaned. The temperatures are not as low as in Finland, but I know what you mean by sweating and the go out on the -10oC .

                  Hi p_dc,
You could also check this out:

It is a company that arranges races and rents racecars here in Finland.
They don´t do it on lakes but any track during winter has enough ice and snow...
Website is also in english, and rented racecars are mostly BMWs.
